Experienced hands at the helm as Chuan Spa launches into New Zealand market

Auckland – 16 April 2009 ---The combined expertise of local and international Langham staff will ensure a successful Chuan Spa launch says Managing Director of The Langham, Auckland, Jeffrey van Vorsselen.

Introducing the unique Chuan Spa to the New Zealand market is the first of several major projects in 2009 for Mr van Vorsselen who has been Managing Director at The Langham, Auckland since October 2008. He was previously General Manager at Langham Place, Mongkok in Hong Kong and oversaw the launch of the very first Chuan Spa in 2005.

“I have experienced first-hand the journey that Chuan Spa has taken since its inception so it’s with great pleasure that we launch Chuan Spa at The Langham, Auckland at this point of refinement and excellence. It will set a new benchmark in spa experience for New Zealand,” says Mr van Vorsselen.

“Chuan Spa at Langham Place has proved exceptionally popular and we know that the integrity of Chuan Spa is due to the guiding principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Similarly Chuan Spa in Melbourne and Chuan Spa Body + Soul in Boston have shown the appetite guests have for a world class spa in order to complete their five-star experience at The Langham .”

After Auckland, Chuan Spa will next launch in the hotel group’s flagship property, The Langham, London later in the year.

A self confessed ‘spa fan’ and believer in the value of spa treatments, Mr van Vorsselen sees Chuan Spa as a ground-breaking product for the New Zealand market. He believes Chuan Spa has the potential to put Auckland on the map, as a spa destination, as Chuan Spa did for Hong Kong only four years ago.

Returning expat and spa industry expert, Ana Crawford is the Director of Chuan Spa and with over 11 years experience in the spa industry, Ms Crawford returns to New Zealand with a wealth of industry knowledge.

Most recently she has worked at a range of destination spa resorts and hotel spas including a stint at the world renowned Chiva-Som in Thailand. Ana has work for the Paua Group in Hong Kong, directing both the Paua Spa at Centre Stage and The Victorian Spa at The Disneyland Hotel.

“I am delighted to bring my international experience to The Langham as we prepare to launch Chuan Spa. I have a great team working alongside me and we are thrilled to open the exquisite Chuan Spa,” says Ms Crawford.

Her team of ten staff have been recruited locally and are experienced therapists who have now been trained in the art of Chuan Spa. Completing the team is Patrice Hardy who is the spa’s registered Chinese Medicine Consultant and a former theatre nurse, who has over five years experience in acupuncture study and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Ms Crawford has spent the last two and a half years running spas in Hong Kong which is where she was first introduced to Chuan Spa as The Langham hotel’s official spa brand. Now passionate about the Chuan Spa experience, Ana says the Chuan journey is entirely unique and has to be experienced.

Mr Barry White, Director of Spa Operations for Langham Hotels International is visiting New Zealand to oversee the launch of Chuan Spa. Mr White was appointed to the role to manage the global operations quality of Chuan Spa.

As Langham Hotels International expands its Chuan Spas in line with the group’s hotel development plans, Mr White will be responsible for ensuring consistency of all spa facilities within the portfolio to exacting brand standards.

Bob van den Oord, Vice President of Sales and Marketing says: “Barry has demonstrated a consistent and innovative eye to the vision of Chuan Spa as we engage our consumers on their journey to wellness. He is able to bring ideas and creative touches which are in line or even ahead of spa trends.”

Barry was most recently Chuan Spa Director at Langham Place, Mongkok, Hong Kong which was nominated for several awards including Best Hong Kong Spa in the South China Morning Post Style Awards and Travel Weekly Asia Awards and winning Best Male Spa Treatments in 2006 at the Asia Spa Baccarat Awards.

Prior to his work at Langham Place, Mongkok, Hong Kong, Barry’s career included positions in Central London and Australia.
